Recap: Free Candy vs. Cider Box Monkeys

Coming off a loss, Free Candy bounced more than Pamela Anderson's chest right back to a .500 on the season with a 6-2 win over the Cider Box Monkeys.

Pat Scoville had a season MVP night, scoring 5 of the team's 6 goals, with player-turned-goalie-turned-player Derrick Rupert scoring the 6th & final goal.

Despite the score looking like a one-man show, the team put on a solid performance at both ends of the rink. The puck spent the majority of the game in the CBMs' zone, and goalie Jonathan Whitbey was left to stop just a handful of shots. Defensive powerhouses Justin Nash, T.J. Doherty, and Dave Menhart were quick on the puck in their own zone.

Free Candy was perfect on the penalty kill, as well, as the game turned physical early on. Cider Box Monkey forward Kevin Hyde took to slashing early in the 1st period and the physical style of play continued for the entire 44 minutes of play.

One thing is for sure: The team is starting to pull it together. Next up: A rematch with the Killer Bees.

Enjoy them for breakfast.

Game 4 - Cider Box Monkeys

Free Candy looks to rebound from their disappointing loss to The Slashers (although, with The Slashers' roster does it really surprise anyone?) on Tuesday.

Building upon their incredible success at The Box's Ironman tournament on Saturday, T.J. Miller, Dave Menhart, & Jeremy Virgin need to look to the same style of passing, forward-looking & jumping ahead in the play today against The CBMs.

Goalie Jonathan Whitbey needs to get his head back into the game after giving up a heart-breaking goal in the shootout in the Ironman playoffs to Thy Tran, who he will again be facing today in the FC-CBM match. Stopping a total of 4 of 5 penalty shots was encouraging, but it's always the one that gets by you.

And could a goalie controversy be brewing in Chantilly? Free Candy forward Derek Rupert had a near-perfect showing in the Ironman tournament on Saturday, giving up only 2 goals total (one of which while filling-in for another team who was without their goalie) going into the finals. If Whitbey has another poor showing in-net, could Free Candy management look to replace Whitbey between the pipes?

One big question remains, however: How much has the past 30 hours has taken out of the players? Between playing in an all-day Ironman tourney on Saturday, and many of the players partaking in a Bronze Division game prior to tonight's tip, could the song being played over the P.A. system be Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty"? We'll find out tonight.

Iron Man Tournament

The Iron Man is coming, and it's coming full force!!

The early favorites would have to be the combination of Miller, Menhart, Riffle, and Virgin. And with Rupert in net, they may be unstoppable. They will be up against some tough competition, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. When asked, Tj Miller had this to say "The way I see it right now, it's gold or bust. My motto has always been go hard of go home, and I feel like we have the most complete team on the rink today". We'll see if his team will be able to back those words up and hold down the Gold medal. Check back later for a recap of the tournie.

Looking Ahead: Iron Man Weekend

This weekend, on Saturday the 21st, four members of Free Candy alongside Sean Riffle (seen below), of Indiana U, will compete in the Potomac Inline Iron Man Tournament. It will be a grueling afternoon with 7 teams playing each team once before the start of the playoffs. On a quick note, some other members of free candy will be playing on opposing teams.

Sean Riffle,23

The members of Free Candy are as follows: Goalie Derek Rupert, TJ Miller, David Menhart, Jeremy Virgin, and newcomer Sean Riffle. This being Sean Riffle's first game @ the Box, he was interviewed about his expectations. Here is what Riffle had to say "I ain't promising victory, but I always come to play hard and I always play balls deep. That is something you can count on, because Riffle and Candy never sounded so sweet".

Riffle and Virgin have some chemistry already, being line mates in previous years, but it will be exciting to see how he gels with the hard hitting TJ Miller and the soft hands but hard shot of Dave Menhart. It seems as if it could be a long weekend for their opponents if 2nd year goalie Derek Rupert has a solid outing.

Recap: Free Candy vs. Slashers

Free Candy's effort tonight @ the box was not up to par in a 7-2 loss. The team did not seem present in the first period, showing no signs of life. The second period was not too far away, although scoring both goals. Free Candy has to look to work on passing, puck possession, and stronger defense when they meet Cider Box Monkeys this Sunday.

Candy Killer.

Game Day 3...Slashers vs. Free Candy

Free Candy enters tonights game 1-1 on the year. They will be facing the 1-1 Slashers who lost to the Bumble Bees in their first game but had a stronger showing in their 2nd against the Cider Box Monkeys. Look for Free Candy to rely heavily on argueably the leagues best player (Scoville) to lead them. If the Slashers try and shut him down then Free Candy will have to rely heavily on their secondary scoring.

PTW (Players to Watch): Defensively: TJ Miller needs to make sound offensive decisions on whether to join the rush or not. Derek Rupert showed a lil shutdown defensive style last game that has been lacking in previous games; he will have to continue that tonight. Whitbey must come up big in goal tonight...If he doesn't it could be a long night...
Offensively: Jeremy Virgin and Dave Menhart must feed off Scoville and finish when they have opportunities. Scoville...play ur game!
